hulot lives in a small backstreet dwelling which contrasts sharply with his sister and brother-in-law madame and monsieur arpel (adrienne servantie and jean-pierre zola)s excessively modern, suburban lifestyle.

when monsieur arpel becomes concerned about the influence hulot is having on his young son gérard (alain bécourt), he gives his brother-in-law a job at his factory.
